1931 Blue Coal football team

1931 Blue Coal football team - lots of well-known Jamestown family names - what was this team? - players identified as follows: Top row: Phillip Trusso, Sebastian Niccario, Meyers Papalardo. Second row: Louis Collins (coach), Joe Panebianco, Pete Scaria, Tom Vicarrio, Busty Marino. Third row: Joe Marino, Joe Bonfiglio Jr., Joe Bonfiglio Sr., Sam Germaine, Nick Columbo. Bottom row: Ross Carone, Sam Carone, Angelo Papa, Nick DeAngelo.

William H. Stahl

We received an inquiry from a Sean Logan of Helena, Montana. The attached photo is his grandfather William H. Stahl who played for a team in Chautauqua, NY in the late 1920s or early 1930s. We are looking for additional information. Our guess is that the team was the Chautauqua Institution team. Note lake in the background. The Institution ball field is on a hill overlooking the lake.

Milton Sweet and Alan Johnson

On the back of the photo are the names Milton Sweet and Alan Johnson - the insignia on the uniform resembles ones we have seen on photos of Falconer High baseball teams in the early 1900. We are looking for additional information.

Gerry team

On back of photo is the name Stanley M. Parkhurst (father of Lyle "Parky" Parkhurst) and the date 1908 - the team apparently represents the village or town of Gerry. We are looking for additional information.

Crescent Street Gang 1927

The Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame acquired this photo titled 1927 Crescent Street Gang. Does anyone recognize any faces?

Both these soccer team photos are believed to have been taken at Allen Park in Jamestown. The photos were provided by John Massey who says that his father, also John Massey, is in each picture. John is interested in learning any information about these teams and players.

mystery photo

When his mother-in-law passed away, Larry Gropp found this photo while going through her estate. Her husband (Richard A Conover - born in 1908) grew up in Buffalo NY and Gropp is curious why this photo might have meant something to him - he kept it so many years. There is not any hand writing on it and Gropp wondered if the players might have been his friends. If any can tell us anything about this photo or the players/date, please contact us.

Visitor response:

In regard to the Mystery Photo with the two ball players with Silver Creek uniforms, my friend out here said that they may belong to the the Silver Creek Horseshoes from around 1904.

I did some research on the internet and found one write-up about the Horseshoes, including names.

Attached is that write-up. These two players look like brothers and there were two brothers on the team.

Hope this helps in some small way.

Ed Payne, Burien, WA
