Wheeling Five Coached by JHS Grad, Wins Toga

Jim Foti's Charges Win State Tourney 4th Year in Row

The Wheeling, W. Va, Central Catholic High School five, coached by Jim Foti, former Jamestown High School football star, recently captured the West Virginia Catholic scholastic basketball championship for the fourth consecutive year.

This was Foti's third championship winning team since he left Erie where he was coach and director of physical education at Cathedral High School.

The Wheeling five now has won the state championship six times in the last seven years.

A Wheeling sports columnist had this to say of the champions and their coach:

"For a team to win a state championship in basketball two consecutive years is considered somewhat of an athletic feat, and to win three times is remarkable, but when it comes to winning four times in succession - well, we don't know just how to define it other than to say that the team that does it is super in any tournament, and that is what Central Catholic High of Wheeling is in basketball this year.

"The Wheeling Central team this year is probably the best team that was ever turned out at the school. It surpasses last year's team in every way. Wheeling citizens are proud of the team and happy in the knowledge that Coach Foti and his local boys were able to bring the state title home with them, again,"
